Song 1980-34: The Eagles, “Heartache Tonight”

Released and hitting the top of the HOT 100 in late 1979, “Heartache Tonight” is the Eagles fifth #1 song. And with the sudden and unexpected death of band co-founder Glenn Frey a few months ago, it would appear it will go down in the books as their last.

The song had already reached #1 and was therefore descending the chart when the ’80s began. The highest position at which “Heartache Tonight” appeared in the ’80s was #34 . Because of the way Billboard uses several weeks of a given year prior when calculating year-end charts, this song had enough chart points to become the #46 song of 1980.

Memorable lyric: “Somebody’s gonna hurt someone before the night is through. Somebody’s gonna come undone. There’s nothing we can do.”
