Song 1980-37: Sugar Hill Gang, “Rapper’s Delight”

Sugar Hill Gang gets the distinctive honor of not only placing the first rap song into our 198x blog, but also into the top 40 of the Billboard HOT 100 ever. With the catchy hook from Chic’s 1979 classic “Good Times” and six minutes of spoken lyrics every school boy and girl attempted to memorize and recite on the school playground, the Gang took this song to #36 in 1980.

It would seem our neighbors to the north loved this song even more than we did. In Canada the song went all the way to #1.

Memorable lyric: “I said a hip hop, the hippie to the hippie. The hip hip a hop, and you don’t stop, a rock it.”
