1980-3: Michael Jackson, “Rock with You”

Song 1980-3 belongs to the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson. It reached #1 and stayed atop for 4 weeks in 1980. Definitely one of his lower budget videos, but fun to watch!

I have this uncontrollable urge to sing the harmonies on this one each time the chorus kicks in. (“…All NIGHT……sunLIGHT!…”)

Memorable lyric: “You gotta feel that heat and we can ride the boogie. Share that beat of love.”

1980-2: Rubert Holmes, “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”

Song 1980-2: Escape (The Piña Colada Song) by Rubert Holmes. This song has the distinction of being the last number 1 song of the ’70s. After dropping to number 2 the first week of the ’80s, it went back to number 1 the following week.

Cue the Solid Gold dancers…

Memorable lyric: “So I waited with high hopes. She walked in the place. I knew her smile in an instant and the curve of her face.”

1980-1: KC and The Sunshine Band, “Please Don’t Go”

As we begin the journey of remembering each of the over 4000 songs to appear on the Hot 100 chart in the ’80s, here is song 1980-1: “Please Don’t Go” by KC and the Sunshine Band. Highest position reached: #1.

I love the ’90s dance cover version of this song by KWS. If you get a chance, look it up on YouTube. But in the meantime, unbutton that shirt a little and pop those collars…

Memorable lyric: “If you leave at least in my lifetime I’ve had one dream come true: I was blessed to be loved by someone as wonderful as you.”

Here We Go!

198xlogoWondering what 198x is all about? Most ’80s radio and internet stations and blogs play and discuss only the most popular songs of the decade. My plan is to use 198x to play and discuss EVERY song that appeared on the Hot 100 chart from January 1980 through December 1989. I mean it when I say EVERY song. Just read on or listen in and you’ll become a believer. But be warned. Playing every song on 198x sister radio station means there will occasionally come a song that you cannot stand. Period. I understand.

But to be a TRUE ’80s blog and radio station I feel obliged to play them all. The hits and the  misses. The top of the chart and the bottom. The smashes and the duds. So since most songs are 3-4 minutes long just hang in there.

As for the blog, I will be give you a quick teaser of each song and then present a music video (when available) of the song. I’ll be sure to add a personal comment as well so you get some type of idea of how I feel about each song.

By the way, like you I am a music lover. I grew up in Alpharetta, Georgia, listening to pop radio in the ’80s on Z-93, and kept track of the top 40 along with all the other “chart geeks” as Casey Kasem counted them down on American Top 40. In high school I was a music editor for the school paper. I studied voice and commercial music in college and obtained a Masters in Music Education. Started a short career in radio in Nashville, TN, before becoming a music teacher. And since 2003 I have been a full-time Worship (Music) Pastor in the northern Cincinnati area. I even have a Doctorate in worship theology, writing my dissertation on worship choirs. But like they say: “You can take the kid out of ’80s pop music, but you can’t take the ’80s pop music out of the kid.” (Or something like that.)

So enjoy ! Enjoy listening to all the songs on the internet station. Enjoy reading the blog entries about each song. And enjoy the music videos, too.
